About Medicine Buddha
This vintage statue depicts the Medicine Buddha (Bhaiṣajyaguru), the revered figure of healing and wisdom in Buddhist tradition. Often shown in deep blue, the colour of lapis lazuli, the Medicine Buddha is revered for curing physical and spiritual suffering through the medicine of wisdom and compassion. His mantra is known for its power to promote healing and purify negative karma.
He sits in meditation on a double lotus base, a symbol of purity and awakening. His right hand rests on his knee in the gesture of giving, holding a stem of the myrobalan plant, known in Tibetan medicine as the king of medicines. His left hand rests in his lap holding a bowl of healing nectar. His robe is finely engraved with floral patterns, and his calm, gentle face invites stillness.
The Medicine Buddha is also associated with twelve sacred vows he made upon attaining enlightenment, each one expressing his deep commitment to healing illness, easing suffering and guiding beings toward spiritual liberation.
His deep dark finish and finely detailed surfaces give him a quiet, timeless presence. No two pieces age the same way, so this statue is one of a kind. He makes a meaningful centrepiece for a meditation space, altar, or healing practice, and a thoughtful gift for anyone on a path of recovery or wellbeing.
