About Mayadevi
Mayadevi, also known as Queen Maya or Maya Devi, was the mother of Siddhartha Gautama, who became the Buddha. This statue shows her in her best-known pose. Her right arm is raised gracefully overhead, recalling the moment in the Lumbini garden in Nepal when she reached for the branch of a sal tree and gave birth to the future Buddha. Her left hand is lifted in a gentle gesture of blessing, and her body sways in a soft, dancer-like curve.
She stands on a lotus base, a symbol of purity and new beginnings, and wears a finely detailed crown, large ring earrings and delicately engraved garments. Her dark finish has worn softly with age, revealing lighter metal on the raised areas and giving her real character. No two pieces age the same way, so this statue is one of a kind.
In Buddhist tradition, Mayadevi represents motherhood, grace and the sacred beginning of the Buddha’s path. She makes a meaningful centrepiece for a meditation space, Buddhist altar, or a thoughtful gift for a new mother.
